Maltese
The Malteses coat is long and silky. The hair on its head may be tied or left hanging. Coat color is pure white, sometimes with light tan or lemon on the ears.
The Maltese is a gentle, playful, affectionate dog that loves to be the center of attention.
It is very receptive to gentle training based on positive reinforcement. Early socialization with people outside the family and with other dogs helps counteract a tendency to be nippy with strangers and to take on larger dogs.
The Maltese will tolerate gentle children over about eight years old and is friendly with cats. This is an ideal dog for city or apartment dwellers because of its diminutive size and minimal exercise needs.

Pinscher
The coat is smooth, short, hard, thick, and close-lying. Coat color is black, black and tan, red, blue, or fawn.
Sharply defined rust markings appear above each eye and on the muzzle, throat, forechest, all four legs and feet, and below the tail. There may be a gray undercoat on the neck.
Dobermans are highly energetic, sensitive dogs that respond well to love and praise but not to heavy-handed discipline.
Well-socialized Dobermans get along with children and other animals if raised with them and if treated with respect, but they can be aggressive with other dogs.
Do not play aggressive games, such as tug-of-war, with Dobermans. While they are natural guard dogs, some Dobermans are so sweet and submissive they will let strangers take anything from their homes in exchange for petting and playtime.
Basic obedience training is mandatory to socialize young Dobermans and enhance bonding with their owners.

Shar-Pei
The coat may be one of three lengths: horse (under 1/2 inch long), brush (1/2 to one inch long), or bear (over one inch long).
The coat is usually cream, fawn, red, or black, and the tongue either bluish-black or lavender (in light-coated dogs).
The loose skin, small ears, thick rounded muzzle, and curled high-set tail are also distinctive.
The independent and sometimes stubborn shar-pei is devoted to its family, protective of its territory, and wary of human and animal strangers. Socialization and obedience classes at an early age are a must. The shar-pei does best with respectful children at least five years old. Confrontations with other animals can be a problem.

West Highland White Terrier
The outercoat is straight, hard, and about two inches long, shorter on the neck and shoulders; the undercoat is short, soft, and tight. Coat color is pure white. Among the breeds distinguishing features are small, erect ears with sharp tips and a black nose.
West Highland white terriers are good family dogs adaptable to life in the cities, suburbs, or country. They are more high-strung than cairn terriers but still respond well to obedience training.
They love to romp with children if socialized with them at an early age and will accept strangers after an initial inspection. Westies are good watchdogs.
They usually get along well with other dogs but may fight for dominance. They get along with cats that are raised in the home but may chase strays.

Yorkshire Terrier
The coat is glossy, fine, silky, straight, and long. The long hair on the head is either parted or tied up with bows. The hair on the muzzle is very long. Coat color is steel blue and golden; puppies are born black and tan.
Yorkshire terriers are energetic, assertive, demanding toy dogs with large-dog attitudes. They are responsive obedience students but want to rule at home, and even larger dogs will defer to them. In general, they get along with other animals.
They are fine with gentle children over about eight years old, especially if socialized with them at an early age. Yorkies bark to announce the arrival of strangers but are usually friendly.
